Internet, Wifi and philosophy

In 1742, Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) and Denis Diderot (1713-1784), two young French intellectuals from the Siècle des Lumières meet in the neighborhood. Both in their 30’s, both highly educated, they share common values.

But they would differ on nearly everything else, especially as far as their philosophical work or reality perception are concerned. They are well known for endless controversies, while strolling in the Palais Royal garden.

Rousseau would be disdainful about being a Philosophe, while Diderot would claim the qualificative for himself (he would later be considered as the archetype philosopher).

In the end, could it is also be the sad story of a beautiful friendship which didn’t happen, as they parted their ways? This was in 1757, when they last met, and when Rousseau left the intellectual circles of the Encyclopedists.

Surely Rousseau would have challenged our addiction to the networks (he would have called it slavery maybe), while Diderot would have marveled at the endless possibilities it brings to our common knowledge and wisdom. Of course that was many years before Facebook and TikTok.
